How did you get into computer science or related fields? What inspired you to take this path?

At the end of the 2017-2018 school year, while working as a math teacher at Benjamin Tasker Middle School, my principal, Dr. Kendra Hill, approached me with an exciting challenge. She envisioned creating a Computer Science program for the school and believed I was the right person to lead the effort. Her confidence in me inspired me to embrace the opportunity wholeheartedly.

I immersed myself in learning and began building the program from the ground up, attending workshops with the University of Texas-Austin, General Assembly, and Code.org. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with computing and its ability to empower anyone, anywhere. I became passionate about the idea that everyone should have the opportunity to learn computer science.

Fast forward to today, I’ve had the privilege of designing several summer computing programs and outreach initiatives serving thousands of students, authoring several articles, and presenting at conferences focused on broadening participation in computer science education. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for a journey that began with one opportunity and has since evolved into a fulfilling career. That first program not only introduced me to the world of computer science but also sparked my passion for making computing education accessible to all. This passion continues to drive my work every day.

What are some of the key successes and challenges you’ve experienced in your journey in computer science?

One major challenge was battling imposter syndrome. Transitioning from a career in Public Relations and Event Management to teaching, I often worried that my students would see me as less than a “traditional” teacher. Surprisingly, they not only accepted my unconventional background but also appreciated the professional experiences and creativity I brought to the classroom. Their grace and open-mindedness motivated me to show up every day and give my best.

What excites you most about computer science, both in general and in your own work?

What I find most exciting about computer science is the unprecedented opportunity to shape the future. We live in an era where imagination and innovation can create transformative solutions. In my role as a Program Impact Manager, I’m particularly inspired by helping campus and external communities gain access to experiences that empower them to design and use AI systems to influence their futures.

What projects are you currently working on, and what are you looking forward to achieving?

Right now, I’m focused on creating student programs for AIM and expanding our TRAILS Affiliate program. Additionally, I’m pursuing a Ph.D. in Information Studies at the University of Maryland’s College of Information under the guidance of Dr. Shena Erete. I’m excited to deepen my expertise and make a broader impact through these efforts.

What advice, suggestions, or resources would you share with people teaching or learning computer science?

Your imagination is limitless! Whether you’re teaching or learning, embrace creativity and think outside the box. Computer science needs your unique perspective and can lead to groundbreaking ideas.
